Social media is a constantly-evolving world of opportunities, and one of its most recent is Pinterest, a site that is growing like wildfire since its launch in 2010. There are currently more than 10.4 million registered users and since 2012, daily users have increased by more than 145%. It is, at present, the fastest growing app on the Internet.

This social photo-sharing platform is built in the form of a pinboard, where users can upload, share and choose pins of their choice – whether images or videos – and create their own pinboards with their favorite pins. Businesses have also found the site very useful to increase brand awareness by developing their own pinboard with images and videos related to their business, that users can browse, get familiar with and pick interesting pins from. For instance, Pinterest is used by organizations like Gap, UNICEF, People and Zales, among many others – all operating in very different industries.

Pinterest can be used by businesses to advertise themselves and reach bigger audiences, but also to help internal productivity by using the pinboard as an organization tool, such as for keeping track of web contents useful for one’s business and organize them in pinboards. It can also be used to share pinboards between colleagues to facilitate collaboration or to have a common central pinboard that can continuously be fed with new pins by different colleagues working on the same project.

Another key of its advantages as well is that Pinterest is organically interlinked with other mega social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, allowing a major circulation of traffic between each of those sites and thus heavily increasing online exposure. More than 1/5 of Facebook-connected users are on Pinterest daily, which represents more than 2 million members – that is, more than 2 million Internet users use both sites simultaneously. Pinterest has been found to generate more referral traffic to websites than YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn all combined. Moreover, its iPhone application also means that users can stay connected to the site on the move and that as a result, businesses can increase their online exposure even more through it.

With its 12 million monthly unique visitors, Pinterest is developing faster than any independent site in history, and the huge market that it has forged in the span of just two years means that it has become a tool that certainly cannot be ignored by businesses that seek to move forward.
